Objective
The Health Care Service Provider of the USA embarked on a journey of data migration to Azure. To initiate this process, they wanted a detailed data warehouse assessment of its Netezza EDW with associated workloads in order to migrate to Azure cloud. They decided to engage Datametica and leverage their expertise in understanding their infrastructure and develop an end-to-end data migration strategy.
Challenges
The Client was running a complex data warehouse environment built over the years. It was further strenuous by complicated data stage jobs and day work production. This was making understanding of the data warehouse cumbersome.
In addition to knowing their environment, they wanted to understand data lineage and job dependencies on each other.
It was difficult for them to develop a data migration strategy without this knowledge. Hence, it was important for them to tackle these challenges.
Solutions
Datametica used Eagle – our Automated data warehouse assessment and data migration planning product for in-depth analysis of the Netezza warehouse of the client. It provided a holistic view of the workloads, accurate estimation of resources, and well-planned data migration strategy including change management.
Discovery and analysis included both development and production Netezza EDW instances and associated DataStage ETL/ELT workloads and dependencies.
We also performed complexity analysis, business case inventory and priorities of Netezza migration to Azure and plan for cutover & decommissioning of Enterprise Data Warehouse.
Benefits
Using our Eagle, we assessed the Netezza environment in 4 weeks. In addition, Details of previous unknown complexity, understanding of data lineage, and user’s behavior were provided.
Recommendation regarding data migration strategy, resource allocation, time, and budget estimation was given. After incorporating their business requirements, Azure’s future state design was put forward.
This ensured a holistic overview of the Netezza system, seamless implementation of the cloud migration process, and reduced business risk.
